WAKAZI wa kijiji cha Kokuro, Kaunti ya Turkana, wameanza kutumia teknolojia ya kidijitali kukabiliana na wizi wa punda na magonjwa ya mifugo, hatua inayobadilisha maisha katika eneo la mpakani mwa Kenya na Ethiopia. Mabadiliko hayo yalidhihirika mwezi uliopita baada ya wavamizi wenye silaha kuiba zaidi ya punda 100. Badala ya kuanza msako wa siku nyingi, wakazi waliripoti tukio hilo kupitia Kituo cha Kidijitali cha Habari za Punda (Donkey Digital Information Hub). Taarifa zilifika haraka kwa maafisa wa usalama na punda hao wakapatikana. Katika eneo hilo, punda ni nguzo ya maisha ya kila siku. Hutumika kubeba maji, chakula, wagonjwa, watoto na mizigo wakati wa kuhama kutokana na ukame. Hapo awali, ukosefu wa mtandao na umbali wa vituo vya serikali ulifanya iwe vigumu kuripoti wizi au magonjwa kwa wakati. Kupitia programu ya Punda Wangu, kila punda husajiliwa kwa picha na alama zake maalumu kama rangi, makovu na michoro ya mwili. Mfumo huo wa kutumia Akili Unde hurahisisha kutambua punda aliyeibwa au kupatikana. Wafugaji wanaweza pia kuripoti wizi, magonjwa au ukatili dhidi ya wanyama kupitia kituo hicho au simu bila malipo, huku maafisa wa usalama na madaktari wa mifugo wakichukua hatua kwa haraka. Mwanafunzi, Nathan Ebei, anasema teknolojia hiyo pia imewasaidia vijana kupata huduma za intaneti na kuwapa wafugaji ushauri wa kitabibu kuhusu chanjo, matibabu na utunzaji wa punda bila kusafiri umbali mrefu. Kwa mujibu wa Takwimu za Kitaifa (KNBS), idadi ya punda nchini ilipungua kutoka milioni 1.8 mnamo 2009 hadi kati ya milioni 1 na 1.17 mnamo 2019. Kupungua huko kunahusishwa na biashara haramu ya ngozi za punda, uchinjaji na wizi unaochochewa na mahitaji ya ngozi hizo katika bara la Asia. Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa Taasisi ya Utafiti Kuhusu Ufugaji wa Kuhamahama (IPDR), Mariko Akileng, alisema mfumo huo unalenga kuunganisha wafugaji moja kwa moja na polisi husika ili kuhakikisha hatua za haraka zinachukuliwa. Pia shirika hilo linaimarisha utekelezaji wa sheria kwa kuwapa mafunzo maafisa wa serikali na wadau kuhusu ulinzi wa wanyama na uendeshaji wa mashtaka dhidi ya wahalifu.
