TUNAPOELEKEA Uchaguzi Mkuu wa 2027, vita muhimu havitakuwa tu kati ya wagombeaji na vyama vya kisiasa. Vitakuwa pia vita vya habari — kati ya ukweli, propaganda, upotoshaji na uwongo unaosambazwa kwa kasi kwenye mitandao ya kijamii. Uchaguzi bado uko mwaka ujao, lakini kampeni ya kuunda mitazamo ya wapiga kura tayari imeanza. WhatsApp, TikTok, Facebook, X na majukwaa mengine yamegeuka maeneo muhimu ya kisiasa. Ujumbe mmoja wa sauti, video iliyohaririwa au picha yenye taarifa za uongo inaweza kuwafikia maelfu ya watu kabla haijathibitishwa. Hatari kubwa ni kwamba, propaganda mara nyingi haiji ikiwa na nembo ya propaganda. Huvalishwa sura ya habari sahihi. Huambatanishwa na picha ya kiongozi, nembo ya chombo cha habari au nukuu inayodaiwa kutoka kwa mtu maarufu. Mtu anayepokea ujumbe huamini kwa sababu umetumwa na ndugu, rafiki au mtu anayemwamini. Hivi majuzi, kwa mfano, taarifa ya uongo ilisambazwa ikidai mwenyekiti wa Tume Huru ya Uchaguzi na Mipaka (IEBC), Erastus Ethekon, alisema Rais William Ruto angeshinda uchaguzi wa 2027. Taarifa hiyo ni mpya au ni picha ya tukio la zamani inayotumiwa kuleta maana mpya? Vyombo vya habari pia vina wajibu mkubwa. Wanahabari wanapaswa kupinga kishawishi cha kuchapisha madai ya wanasiasa kwa sababu tu yana uwezo wa kuvutia wasomaji. Habari ya uchaguzi lazima iwe na ushahidi, muktadha na uwiano. Kwa upande wao, wanasiasa wanapaswa kuacha kutumia propaganda kama silaha ya kisiasa. Ushindi wa uchaguzi unaopatikana kwa kuwadanganya wananchi unaweza kuleta mamlaka, lakini hauwezi kujenga imani.
