Bei ya mahindi yaanza kupanda baada ya mavuno duni Bonde la Ufa

BEI ya mahindi imepanda kwa kasi katika maeneo mbalimbali ya Bonde la Ufa kutokana na mavuno duni yaliyosababishwa na mvua isiyotabirika. Hali hii inazua hofu ya ongezeko zaidi la bei ya unga na kulazimu serikali kuwazia kuagiza mahindi kutoka nje ili kuzuia upungufu wa chakula. Katika Kaunti ya Nakuru, gunia la mahindi la kilo 90 sasa linauzwa kati ya Sh4,500 na Sh4,600 kutoka takriban Sh3,700 miezi miwili iliyopita, ishara ya kupungua kwa akiba katika mojawapo ya maeneo makuu yanayozalisha mahindi nchini. Katika Kaunti ya Narok, ambapo uvunaji umeanza katika sehemu za Narok Kusini, Narok Kaskazini na Narok Magharibi, gunia hilo linauzwa kati ya Sh4,000 na Sh4,600. Ongezeko hilo linajiri huku wakulima wengi katika Bonde la Ufa wakiripoti mavuno duni kutokana na kiangazi cha muda mrefu, uhaba wa mvua na magonjwa yaliyoshambulia mazao wakati wa hatua muhimu ya ukuaji. Shirika la Utafiti wa Kilimo na Mifugo Kenya (KALRO) limesema mabadiliko ya hali ya hewa yameathiri pakubwa uzalishaji wa mahindi katika maeneo mengi. "Maeneo mengi yalipata mvua chache. Magonjwa na wadudu pia wamezidisha hali hiyo, jambo litakaloathiri uzalishaji msimu huu," alisema Mkurugenzi Mkuu wa Kalro, Dkt Patrick Ketiema, mjini Naivasha. Wakulima wengi wamepata hasara baada ya mazao kuharibika hasa katika maeneo ya Njoro, Rongai, Mauche na Elburgon, Kaunti ya Nakuru. Wakulima wa Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Pokot Magharibi na Elgeyo Marakwet pia wanasema mahindi yao yalidumaa baada ya mvua kukatika wakati wa kipindi muhimu cha ukuaji. Hasara kama hiyo pia imeripotiwa katika eneo la Trans Mara, hasa maeneobunge ya Emurua Dikirr na Kilgoris. Kutokana na mavuno duni, wakulima wengi sasa wanakadiria hasara. Baadhi yao wameamua kung'oa mahindi kabla ya kukomaa ili kuandaa mashamba kupanda tena mvua ya El Niño inayotarajiwa mwezi Septemba na Oktoba ikianza. Wengine wamekata mahindi yaliyokauka na kuyatumia kama lishe ya mifugo, huku wengine wakipanda maharagwe, ambayo hukomaa kwa muda mfupi, ili kurejesha sehemu ya fedha walizowekeza. Narok, wakulima wanasema uzalishaji umepungua karibu kwa nusu. "Kwa wastani, mkulima anavuna kati ya magunia 10 na 15 kwa ekari ilhali zamani tulikuwa tukivuna kati ya magunia 20 na 27," alisema mkulima Julius Rotich wa eneo la Katakala. Aliwashutumu mabroka kwa kutumia udhaifu wa wakulima kununua mahindi moja kwa moja mashambani kwa bei ya kati ya Sh3,500 na Sh3,700 kwa gunia, licha ya Bodi ya Kitaifa ya Nafaka na Mazao (NCPB) kutoa bei ya Sh4,000.
