SERIKALI haiwezi kuruhusiwa kukaa kimya huku visa vya uhuni wa kisiasa vikiongezeka. Kwa muda mrefu serikali imekuwa ikitoa vitisho vikali visivyotekelezwa. Kila mara viongozi wa Wizara ya Usalama wa Ndani, Idara ya Polisi na Tume ya Uchaguzi (IEBC) huahidi kuwachukulia hatua wanaovuruga mikutano ya kisiasa na kuhatarisha maisha ya wananchi. Kumbe ni maneno matupu tu! Jana, nusura dereva wa Gavana wa Murang'a Irungu Kang'ata apoteze maisha baada ya kushambuliwa wakati wa kampeni za uchaguzi mdogo wa ubunge wa Ol Kalou, Kaunti ya Nyandarua. Kinachotia wasiwasi zaidi ni kwamba matukio haya yanatokea mwaka mmoja kabla ya uchaguzi mkuu wa 2027, kipindi ambacho kawaida huwa na joto la kisiasa. Ikiwa hatua hazitachukuliwa sasa, nchi hii inaweza kujikuta ikirejea katika machafuko ya kisiasa sawia na yanayotokea kila mara uchaguzi unapokaribia. Waziri wa Usalama wa Ndani, Kipchumba Murkomen amekuwa akitoa onyo kwa wanaojihusisha na ghasia hizi. Je, Idara ya Polisi na IEBC nazo zimechukua hatua gani? Ahadi hizo zitakuwa na maana gani ikiwa kila siku wananchi wanaendelea kushuhudia mashambulizi mapya bila wahusika kuwajibishwa? Kilicho muhimu si kutoa matamko ya kulaani baada ya vurugu kutokea, bali kuzuia vurugu hizo kabla hazijaanza. Serikali ina vyombo vya ujasusi, polisi na mamlaka yote ya kutosha kubaini wanaopanga na kufadhili magenge ya kisiasa. Kushindwa kufanya hivyo kunazua maswali kuhusu dhamira ya kweli ya kukomesha jinamizi hili. Sheria lazima itekelezwe bila upendeleo wa kisiasa. Mtu yeyote anayepanga, kufadhili au kushiriki katika mashambulizi ya kisiasa anapaswa kukamatwa na kufikishwa mahakamani, bila kujali cheo, chama au ushawishi wake. Huo ndio utakuwa mwanzo wa kurejesha imani ya wananchi katika vyombo vya dola. Demokrasia haiwezi kustawi pale ambapo vurugu imekithiri. Serikali ina wajibu wa kuhakikisha kila mwanasiasa na kila Mkenya ana uhuru wa kushiriki shughuli za kisiasa bila hofu ya kushambuliwa. Wakati wa ahadi umepita; kilichosalia sasa ni hatua madhubuti.
