Waboni wataka fidia kwa 'kuharibiwa maisha' na operesheni ya KDF
JAMII ya Waboni katika Kaunti ya Lamu inaishinikiza serikali ya kitaifa kuwalipa fidia kwa kutatiza hali yao ya kawaida ya kimaisha kwa miaka 11 ambayo oparesheni ya kupambana na ugaidi imekuwa ikiendelezwa eneo hilo. Kulingana nao, oparesheni ya kukabiliana na magaidi wa Al-Shabaab katika Msitu wa Boni iliyoanza mwaka wa 2015, imewazuia kuishi walivyozoea kwa kuwinda wanyamapori, kuchuma matunda ya mwituni na kuvuna asali asili msituni. Wakiongozwa na Diwani wa Zamani wa Basuba, Bw Mohamed Delo, waliitaka serikali ya kitaifa kuwalipa fidia ili wagharamie shughuli nyingine za kimaisha zisizowahitaji kuingia msituni. "Ingekuwa haki kama walivyolipa wavuvi walioathiriwa na Bandari ya Lamu Sh1.76 bilioni basi pia na sisi tufidiwe sawia," akasema Bw Delo, akisisitiza kuwa ombi lao halimaanishi wanapiga vita serikali. Bw Omar Bwana Barissa, mzee wa kijiji cha Basuba, alisema jamii hiyo pia ina madhabahu ya kitamaduni ndani ya msitu wa Boni. "Tangu operesheni ianzishwe hata kufika huko ndani ya msitu angalau kuomba haiwezekani," akasema Bw Barissa. Bi Halima Musa, mkazi wa kijiji cha Mararani, alisema wamejaribu kubadili maisha kwa kuingilia kilimo, lakini wanakumbwa na changamoto ya uvamizi wa wanyamapori wanaoharibu mashamba yao kila mara. Kamishna wa Kaunti ya Lamu, Bw Stephen Sangolo alisema bado hajapokea malalamishi rasmi kutoka kwa jamii hiyo kuhusu fidia.

Ekari 30,000 za msitu wa Mlima Kenya zateketea kwa moto
KARIBU ekari 30,000 za maeneo ya nyanda za juu katika Msitu wa Mlima Kenya zimeteketea kutokana na moto mkali uliozuka Septemba 1. Afisa wa kuhifadhi Misitu Kaunti ya Meru Wellington Ndaka, alisema moto huo umeathiri sehemu nne za misitu ya Ruthumbi, Mucheene, Marania na Meru, huku ukitishia kusambaa hadi sehemu nyingine yenye miti ya kiasili. Bw Ndaka alisema moto huo ulikuwa ukienea kwa kasi kutokana na upepo mkali, ukavu na vichaka vya nyanda za juu ambavyo hushika moto kwa urahisi. Zaidi ya watu 800, wakiwemo wakazi, maafisa wa Shirika la Misitu Kenya (KFS), walinzi wa Shirika la Huduma kwa Wanyamapori (KWS) na wanajeshi, walishiriki juhudi za kuuzima moto huo. Mashirika ya uhifadhi msitu kama Mount Kenya Trust, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Rhino Ark, Borana Conservancy, Kisima Farm na Tropic Air, pia yalishiriki juhudi za kuzima moto. "Juhudi za kuuzima moto huo zinatatizwa ardhi kavu na hali ya hewa iliyopo. Tunatumia mashine za KDF na KFS kutengeneza njia za kuzuia moto ili usisambae hadi kwenye miti ya kiasili," akasema Bw Ndaka. Moto huo ulisambaa kutoka Kibaranyaki kuelekea Rutundu, Ziwa Alice na Ziwa Ellis, huku upepo mkali ukichochea kuenea kwake baada ya baadhi ya maeneo kuzimwa. Wazima moto walilazimika kusafirishwa kwa helikopta hadi maeneo ya chini ya mlima ili kudhibiti moto uliokuwa ukielekea Korongo la Kathita na Ziwa Rutundu. Hata walilazimika kujiondoa kutokana na upepo mkali. Bw Ndaka aliwaomba wafadhili na mashirika kusaidia kwa chakula, vifaa vya kuzimia moto na mafuta, huku wanachama wa mashirika ya kijamii wakihimizwa kujitolea katika shughuli za uokoaji. Moto huo ulizuka wakati maafisa wengine walikuwa wakidhibiti moto katika misitu ya Aberdare, ambako zaidi ya ekari 200 ziliteketea. Akikagua shughuli za kuzima moto Mlima Kenya, Katibu Mkuu wa Misitu Gitonga Mugambi alisema ujenzi wa uwanja wa ndege ni muhimu ili kusaidia kukabiliana na dharura kama hizo. "Kama tungekuwa na uwanja wa ndege katika msitu, ingekuwa rahisi kudhibiti moto unaosambaa kwa kasi katika Mlima Kenya," akasema. KFS imesema zaidi ya ekari 96,000 za misitu zimeharibiwa na moto katika kipindi cha miaka mitano iliyopita.
